Why Big Tech Wars Are Great for Developers! Are You Maximizing Your Career Growth?

Walmart and Amazon are two of the biggest companies in the United States, if not the world, and the success of these corporations is largely driven by software developers. Because of this, both companies are using competitive compensation packages to attract talent.

Amazon and Walmart are comparable with respect to salary and bonuses for developers, but Amazon offering its burgeoning stock as part of its package probably give the company a big advantage with respect to hiring top talent.

With this battle over tech talent raging, you should be asking yourself: Am I taking full advantage of the situation?

Associate with Positive, Successful People

One of several best approaches to self-motivate and make yourself more available for career opportunities is to keep a positive mindset.

Spending more time with positive, successful people can help to put you in the right frame of mind. The relationships you form with these people should be mutually beneficial and you should be able to count on each other for advice or support. This kind of network can also expose you to good career opportunities. For instance, someone you know might refer you to a hiring manager at a great company or potential clients for freelance work.

Even if you don’t see many tangible benefits, just being around positive people can help you become more ambitious and inspired.

Push for a Step Up at Your Current Job

We all know that 2020 wasn’t the best year to ask for a raise or promotion. However, the economic situation is improving and getting a raise or promotion is one of the easier ways to advance your career.

Websites like Glassdoor and Indeed have salary information that you can reference and use in your efforts. Once you have a sense of what you’re trying to get, list all of your key contributions and ways you have helped the company. It is critical to have specific reasons for a bigger paycheck or a better title.

Look for a Better Job

Let’s keep it real: Some jobs and some companies have pay better than others. If you think there’s no room to move up or make more money, it may be time to either change departments or employers altogether. Even if you just got a raise before COVID, you could do better elsewhere. According to data from ADP, people who switch jobs average a 20 percent larger salary than those stick with an existing position.

In some organizations, even the top performers are locked into standard raises. When you are looking to switch employers, you are in a position to negotiate for a better compensation and more benefits. The more experience you have in your field, the better position you are in to negotiate.

Just don’t accept the first offer. A recent survey of new employees had 52 percent saying the first offer they received was less than the salary they ended up negotiating.
