Successfully Find A New IT Job While You’re Still Employed

Trying to find a new job while still employed may seem like the best of both worlds but trying to pull this off comes with a few extra challenges.

Staffing company recruiters and potential employers often want to talk with still-employed applicants because they likely have solid experience and current abilities. However, seeking jobs while working full-time means logistical complications. Unless layoffs are in the pipeline and you have the green light to look for a new job, you have to flip into secret agent mode and make sure your current employer is none the wiser.

If you would like to find a job while employed, think about the following tips.

Get Your LinkedIn Profile Up to Date

Updating a few things on your LinkedIn profile is one of those moves that will probably fly under the radar of your current employer but can have a major positive impact on your job search.

First, think about switching off notifications so your profile updates are not displayed across your network. Second, change your profile to say that you’re looking for a new job unless you want your employer to find out. Finally, update your skills, qualifications and experience sections with any relevant details from your current job. Simply updating your profile with your current job details shouldn’t be enough to tip-off your employer.

Keep a Lid on It

It can be annoying and non-gratifying to keep quiet about a job search, especially if you really don’t like your current situation. Or, may want to reassurances from co-workers if an opportunity falls through. Battle the urge to let the cat out of the bag to anyone. In most companies, telling one person is the same as telling them all.

Also, don’t divulge your search on social media. Some HR employees peruse the social accounts of their staff members and you never know who is connected to whom. Hinting about a job search on social media is especially bad if you happen to be connected to your current co-workers or boss.

Don’t Skip Out on Your Current Job

Most people use the old “doctor appointment” excuse to take time off from a current job for a job interview. However, you can only take off for so many doctor appointments before people either suspect you are sneaking out for interviews or have a serious medical condition. If possible, schedule interviews for before work, during lunch or after you get out. A lot of businesses will accommodate you if you are transparent about not wanting to ruin your current job situation.

Keep Up Your Performance

Some people who feel like they’re on their way out the door will take on a devil-may-care attitude and start shirking their responsibilities. Don’t be that person. You never know if a potential employer will go with a different applicant or if a final job offer isn’t good enough for you to make the leap.
