Is AI the Big Brother in the (Not So) Future of Work?

While many jobs have performance metrics tied to them, evaluating employees has largely been based on observations and subjective assessments.

More recently, however, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms emerging in the field of human resources have allowed company managers to take a more objective, data-driven approach to evaluating and improving performance.

Using these algorithms, information about how staff members do their job can be examined and subsequently used to inform decisions on everything from training to the allocation of resources. AI approaches to the way we work have advanced to the point that they are shaping the modern workplace.

Using AI to Identify Patterns

AI is being utilized in many approaches to boost performance by identifying and learning worker patterns.

Since organizations are already collecting all kinds of data, it only makes sense to process all that information in a useful manner. Locating trends and patterns is important to comprehending the information being gathered. AI gives businesses the capability to identify patterns swiftly so they can take fast action to deal with barriers or stop damaging trends.

For example, AI can take information from an automated system and swiftly identify a trending slowdown within the company overall, a department or even an individual. This capacity can easily lead to a rapid resolution of various issues.

Tracking Patterns

One approach to using AI to boost employee performance is to track the many discussions that customer service agents have with customers; over chat, e-mail or phone. These kinds of discussions have always been recorded for some time, for quality purposes, so the idea of Big Brother listening in is almost nonexistent. Furthermore, when companies prioritize transparency in the way AI is being it builds confidence and trust in the technology.

This indicates that AI, when applied properly, doesn’t need to be intrusive. It can and should concentrate on the positive facets of supporting and expanding productivity.

A different use of this technology is enhancing the experience and overall performance of delivecy employees. These employees can have intricate schedules and optimizing these schedules using AI can make their job as efficient as possible. A business is now able to track a mobile employee throughout their day and evaluate their schedule it to support a superior customer experience. The benefits include better cost effectiveness, better performance from delivery workers and more satisfied customers.

AI in Recruitment

In addition to changing the way we work; AI is also changing how companies hire people to do work. Currently, there are tools for application screening, candidate engagement and even on-boarding. For instance, most applicant tracking systems (ATS) are capable of automated screening, but an AI algorithm can pick out patterns in each hiring cycle and compare them to the performances of new hires. The result is a hiring process that gets smarter as it learns.
