The days are getting a bit longer and we’re all seeing the light at the end of the tunnel known as COVID-19.
With the world set to open up over the course of 2022, there will likely be more opportunities than ever for in-the-know professionals. Keep up with the latest by reading about how the rise of remote work has changed hiring, using culture to battle The Great Resignation and .
Hiring in the Era of Expanded Remote Work
It’s been well documented that much of the business world had to pivot to remote working in early 2020 due to COVID, but as we move forward, will increased remote work still affect how business gets done?
According to a new article in the Harvard Business Review, the hiring of workers is one key area that will likely never be the same. Authors Adam Ozimek and Christopher Staton argue that the pandemic has opened the door to flexible and open talent workforce models. These models are based on a workforce that is not permanently attached to the company.
Flexibility is the primary benefit of these models. Companies can quickly scale up or down and adopt a project-based approach to its staffing.
Fighting the Great Resignation with Culture
People are quitting their jobs like nobody’s business and employers need to take a proactive approach to keeping their employees onboard. A recent survey from MIT on why people are quitting showed three main reasons were toxic culture, lack of recognition and a poor response to COVID-19.
The results of the survey also point to one major solution – building a culture that attracts, not repels.
If you aren’t sure about the state of your company culture, you’d better find out. This is the perfect time to engage employees and find out what they are thinking. Companies should be collecting feedback on the state of their workplace and taking action based on the responses they get.
Companies should also do what they can to maintain positive morale by injecting a bit of fun into the workweek. One way to keep the workplace upbeat is to empower the most socially active employees. Whether it’s free lunch at a local restaurant or a Friday happy hour, the social butterflies of a workplace will know what it takes to lighten the mood from week to week.
Putin’s War Could Trigger Another Chip Shortage
In addition to the horrible situation unfolding in Ukraine right now, the Russian invasion will likely have countless negative knock-on effects.
One potential knock-on impact is another shortage of computer chips used in everything from automobiles to smartphones. Ukraine is a major producer on neon gas, which plays a crucial role in the production of semiconductors. Neon powers the lasers used to fabricate computer chips.
The semiconductor industry is still reeling from shortages triggered by the COVID pandemic. In 2021, almost every car maker said they would be scaling back production due to chip shortages.
