The COVID-19 pandemic finally appears to be in the rear mirror and there’s a lot to be optimistic about right now.
With the world set to open up over the course of 2022, there will likely be more opportunities than ever for in-the-know tech professionals. Keep up with the latest by reading about post-pandemic conflict management, scaling a start-up and the challenges of cloud adoption.
Navigating Post-COVID Conflict in the Workplace
While the pandemic itself is winding down, the negative energy it unfurled is having lasting repercussions. People, businesses, and even countries seem to be viewing everything in terms of “with us or against us.”
After feeling a lack of control for the past two years, our brains have been conditions to sort everything into two buckets: good and bad. This is psychological phenomenon called “splitting” has caused quite a few people to see those around them as adversaries. As a result, company leaders are finding themselves more engaged in conflict resolution than they have been in the past.
One of the best ways to address this phenomenon is practicing self-awareness and mindfulness. Try to be conscious of when you’re falling victim to splitting and take mental note of what seems to trigger your desire to be confrontational.
If you do fall into the trap of seeing your coworkers in a binary way, keep in mind that a few cases of “bad behavior” isn’t doesn’t mean that person is evil. Focus on any situational nuances and be open-minded to other perspectives. Rather than thinking about people involved in the process, concentrate on ways to adjust strategy, refine processes and improve culture. If you are in a leadership position, consider ways to improve communication and pay attention to any negativity within your team.
Growing and Scaling a Start-Up
Starting and sustaining a start-up is a massive win, one in which founders should take pride. However, a successful start-up inevitably needs to grow, or else risk stagnation.
Growing and scaling a small business includes a far different set of challenges than launching a start-up. In a recent article for First Round Review, start-up expert Cristina Cordova lays out a number of helpful hints for start-up leaders looking to grow.
One of Cordova’s first tips is for start-up leaders to focus less on leveraging their core competencies and more on helping others do their job. For people with a tech background, this could involve learning more about product development and other business concepts. For someone with a business background, being helpful to others could involve learning about network architecture or software development concepts.
A Difficult Shift to The Cloud
According to a new study from the tech company Foundry, companies looking to shift resources to the cloud are facing a number of major obstacles.
The survey found that controlling costs, data privacy and a lack of security talent were the biggest obstacles to a cloud transition. But despite these challenges and others, 60 percent of survey respondents said cloud adoption led to increased revenue and sustainable growth.
