History

Software Management Consultants, Inc. (SMCI®) was launched in 1983 by three Information Technology consultants: Alden J. Metz, Kenneth F. Earley, and Spencer L. Karpf (SMCI® Owner and CEO 1983-2021).

“As consultants, we knew the IT staffing industry from the inside and felt we could do a better job of providing clients with ‘the right resources’ rather than simply flooding them with candidates, as was the standard industry practice in the early 80’s”, said Karpf.

From the beginning, SMCI® developed and nurtured client relationships that resulted in long-term connections. Strong partnerships with client managers steadily grew and as these managers moved within the IT community, they continued to contact SMCI® to provide top-level resources, enabling the organization to organically build a client base strengthened by personal experience and confidence.

The emphasis on building authentic long-term relationships and delivering results rather than focusing on short-term gains was well received by the community. Positive customer response was overwhelming and SMCI® was on its way to growth.

Originally based in Spencer’s bedroom, SMCI® moved into their first corporate office on Brand Boulevard in Glendale, California, in 1986.

In 1991 SMCI® expanded and moved to their current location at 500 North Brand Blvd in Glendale, California.

In 2019, SMCI® opened a second full-service office in Tampa, Florida, to better serve their east coast clients and consultants. In addition to Glendale and Tampa, SMCI® has a presence in Orange County, Playa Vista, and San Francisco, California, as well as Phoenix, Arizona, reinforcing their commitment to providing best-in-class workforce solutions to the technology community.

In July 2021, Milestone Technologies, a Silicon Valley-based global IT managed services firm operating in 36 countries, acquired SMCI®. The acquisition complemented Milestone’s ability to drive workforce solutions for its clients through SMCI’s® deep expertise in Talent Management Solutions and running large PMOs.
