3 Reasons Why A Mid-Career Career Switch To IT Is An Excellent Decision

It’s widely known that information technology (IT) offers many career possibilities, but is it too late to start a career in tech if you’re already in the middle of another career path?

It’s common to think you’re too old or it’s too late to make a career change. However, in most cases, nothing could be further from the truth. With the average age of retirement on the rise, there’s more time than ever to change careers. For instance, those over 50 could 15 years, 20 years or more of working life left. Even so-called retired people often keep busy with consulting work.

Furthermore, those in the middle of another career have plenty of experience in a professional environment that they could bring to an IT career.

If you’re looking to get into the tech industry, now is a great time to plan a smart transition strategy.

Three reasons why you should consider the switch

Many job opportunities

For decades, tech professionals have enjoyed favorable job market conditions and the situation is expected to remain that way. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of available tech jobs is will grow by 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, which is faster than the average growth rate.

Furthermore, tech job opportunities are starting to appear in industries they have typically not been associated with in the past. This is because most businesses cannot prosper without modern IT tools. The scope of work for tech professionals will continue to evolve, which means more opportunities for those who have IT skills.

For those eyeing a career change, there has never been a better time to get into tech. Between the lack of qualified applicants and the booming economy, tech professionals can hold out for a position they want, not just accept whatever comes their way. The labor equation favors those supplying the labor at the moment and it looks to be that way for quite a while to come.

Good pay

While money is not a determining factor for everyone, the average salaries for tech jobs means it’s much easier to make a financial investment in gaining tech skills.

In many industries, six-figure salaries are usually reserved for those in upper management. Not so in tech. Professionals with in-demand skills and just a few years of experience can find themselves making an annual salary in excess of $100,000.

Mentally-stimulating work

Many folks leave jobs that do not challenge them. In highly technical roles, that is not an issue: There is always a new challenge to address, threat to address, or tool to develop.

Furthermore, there’s always room to grow and learn. New systems and structures are always being created make an IT professional’s job more efficient or more expansive. You can spend an entire lifetime exploring all the learning possibilities in the tech world and still just barely scratch the surface.
