In the Beginning
Software Management Consultants, Inc. (SMCI) was launched in 1983 by three Information Technology consultants: Alden J. Metz (current CIO), Kenneth F. Earley, and Spencer L. Karpf (current owner, President and CEO).
As consultants, we knew the IT staffing industry from the inside and felt we could do a better job of providing clients with “just the right resources” rather than simply flooding them with candidates, as was the standard industry practice in the early 80’s.
From the beginning, we nurtured and developed numerous new client relationships that resulted in long-term, positive connections. Our partnerships with client managers steadily grew and as these managers moved within the IT sphere, they continued to reach back to us to provide top level resources, enabling us to organically build a client base strengthened by personal confidence.
SMCI was on its way.
Originally based in Spencer’s 3rd bedroom, we moved into a true corporate office on Brand Boulevard in Glendale in 1986. In 1991 we expanded our corporate offices and moved them to our current location at 500 North Brand Blvd.
Though we have continued to grow, we have maintained (and continued to expand) our corporate offices at the 500 North Brand Blvd. address for over 20 years.
In 1993, we opened a very successful regional office in Charlotte, North Carolina. This office has earned an excellent reputation and recognition for its growth.
We continued our growth in 2004 with the opening of our second regional office in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2008, in order to better serve a growing Orange County client base, we opened a second Southern California office in Costa Mesa, CA.
2009 saw the beginning of a planned expansion into Northern California with the opening of our first Bay Area office in San Francisco. In 2013, SMCI expanded its presence in the Bay Area with the opening of an East Bay office in Pleasanton, CA. Our current Bay Area plans include the eventual opening of a South Bay office to strengthen our influence in this important technology region.
Adherence to our founding principles of professionalism, quality, and ethical integrity has resulted in continuous growth for over 30 years. We expect this trend to continue well into the future under the guidance of Robert Maltzman, our new COO and an 18-year SMCI veteran – and we all look forward to serving you.
